2018 budget: What NMA said about the recent allocation to healthcare

- NMA has praised the Senate for the allocation for healthcare as stated in the 2018 budget

- The association described the move by the Senate as monumental

- The newly elected president of the NMA, Francis Faduyile, said that the allocation will help in solving problems in Nigeria's healthcare sysytem

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has commended the inclusion of one per cent of the consolidated revenue fund in the allocation to the health sector in the 2018 budget as ‘monumental’.

The Senate slated N57. 15 billion for the basic healthcare provision fund as mandated by the National Health Act, a law passed in 2014 but still to be completely implemented, Premium Times reports.

Concerning this, the newly elected president of the association, Francis Faduyile, said: “For the first time the Senate has put the Consolidated Health Care Fund on the budget. That one percent will go into revamping the Primary Health Care system and the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.”

Faduyile said with joy: “This is monumental. It is one of the greatest things that can happen in Nigeria. We believe this will change the trajectory of the country’s health system.”

He remarked that the fund will assisted in reducing the out-of-pocket spending by Nigerians for their healthcare.

He stated: “It will further change the status of the National Health Act, a law signed into law in 2014 and came into effect in 2016 after 10 years of consideration.” The NMA president urged President Muhammadu Buhari to speedily assent to the budget.

He said: “We want to plead with the president to quickly give assent to this budget and ensure it is is well spent.”

Meanwhile, reported that the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on Thursday, April 12, assured that the lawmakers would do all within their powers to ensure that the 2018 budget was ready by the end of this May. gathered that he stated this at Ogbomoso High School during an empowerment programme organised by a lawmaker representing Ogbomoso north/south/Oriire federal constituency, Segun Ogunwuyi.
