Osinbajo lays foundation for 1,727 houses in Edo

Alexander Okere, Benin

The Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has laid the foundation for the 1,727 housing units at the Emotan Garden Estate in the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Vice-President was accompanied by Governor Godwin Obaseki, his deputy, Philip Shaibu; former governor, Adams Oshiomhole; and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.

Osinbajo commended the state government for the initiative, which he said would assist to reduce the housing deficit in the state.

He also expressed the hope that the project would enable Nigerians to own affordable homes, adding that given the fact that the first building was completed in 12 days, 1,000 units could be completed in the next few months.

Osinbajo later visited the Edaiken Market in Uselu, where he was greeted by market women and other traders before making his way to a town hall meeting at Ihogbe College on ICE Road, Benin.

He later inaugurated the micro, small and medium-scale enterprises clinic and the South-South Innovation Hub.

Speaking on the housing estate, Obaseki explained that the project was his administration’s flagship in the provision of modern infrastructure for the people of the state for the first time in the last 16 years.

Obaseki said that housing was vital to creating jobs and was part of his commitments to create 200,000 jobs as 80 per cent of the building materials were sourced in the state.

While noting that Edo was beginning a new paradigm shift in housing, the governor added that the new homes would be sold at affordable rates, between N3m and N12m.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mixta Africa Real Estate Plc, Mr. Eddy Eguavoen, thanked the governor for supporting the partnership to reduce the national housing deficit estimated at over 17 million homes.

Eguavoen gave the assurance that the project would be delivered in line with quality and standards.
