The BBC is under fire after the f-word was said eighteen times in an expletive-laden episode of army drama Our Girl.

Audiences were furious with the amount of swearing in the first episode of the show's third series, which aired post-watershed on Tuesday night.

In total 28 expletives were uttered by the characters in the BBC1 programme including  s***, p***, a***, t*** and b*******.

Last night's episode followed army medic Lance Corporal Georgie Lane, played by Michelle Keegan, 30, on a humanitarian mission to Nepal.

Fans slammed the 'unnecessary' bad language and complained it was up on the previous two series, reports the Sun.

Alex Tunnicliffe asked on social media: 'What's with all the swearing? Never been like this in previous series. Not very BBC, I must say.'

Another fumed: 'Poor first episode littered with unnecessary bad language, truly disappointed.'

Kathryn Maclean asked: 'BBC is all that swearing really necessary?'

One fan added: 'I love Our Girl, but noticed there's so much more bad language in this series. I'm shocked.'

Fans were also unimpressed with Georgie's 'flawless' hair and make-up and said it was as 'unrealistic'.

One viewer quipped: 'How does Michelle's make up stay flawless when on a relief mission in Nepal and mine can't even survive my commute to work.'

Another tweeted: 'Michelle Keegan on a Nepalese Humanitarian Mission complete with Mascara, lip gloss and eyebrow pencil.'

The viewing figures for Our Girl were 4.1 million, up on the 3.8 opening figure of the last series.

The BBC said viewers were warned that there would be bad language at the beginning of the episode.
