Jordan Morris, 20, wasn’t eligible for beer-sponsored USMNT Man of the Match award

We’ll probably all remember where we watched the U.S. national team’s latest “Dos A Cero” (2-0) victory over Mexico, on Wednesday night, the night that Stanford University forward Jordan Morris scored his first international goal in his first start.

We’ll remember that night especially well if Morris goes on to have a long, successful career for the USMNT, scores lots of goals and leads the United States to its first ever World Cup title. OK, sorry, as an American it’s only natural to not only hop aboard the hype train when a youngster bursts onto the scene, but to assist that train in reaching dangerous levels of hype at every opportunity.

On Wednesday night, Jordan Morris was the USMNT’s man of the match in hearts and minds, but the 20-year-old college junior-to-be wasn’t the Man of the Match. That’s because U.S. Soccer’s official award for Man of the Match is sponsored by Budweiser, and since Budweiser is a beer, and Morris is only 20, he was therefore ineligible for the honor.

That’s actually quite funny, because as the only amateur on a team full of exemplary professionals who adhere to strict regimens of nutrition, exercise and treatment, the college kid is probably the one guy who’s most familiar with this product known as “Budweiser.”

Don’t worry about Morris, though, he didn’t go home empty-handed. Captain Michael Bradley presented to Morris what effectively translates to the scalp of Mexico on the night he opened he slayed the USMNT’s fiercest rival.
