Lens has appointed Jean-Louis Garcia as their coach in an attempt to recover top-flight status in France.

The French side suffered relegation from Ligue 1 at the end of the 2010-11 campaign and parted company with Laszlo Boloni in the aftermath.

Garcia, 48, was the coach of Ligue 2 side Angers last season and guided them to the Coupe de France semifinals. He had also previously been the manager of the Bordeaux reserve team.

The former goalkeeper is delighted to have been given the task of coaching Lens and said on the club’s official website: "I am pleased and proud to have been approached by president [Gervais] Martel.

“It is therefore with great pleasure and a real motivation that I join Lens as head coach. With my staff, I will do everything to complete this great and wonderful project proposed by this leading French club.

"My goal is to rebuild a competitive team which the club's enthusiastic fans will be able to recognize and identify with."
