West Ham defender Arthur Masuaku has issued an apology after he was sent off for spitting at Wigan's Nick Powell during his side's shock defeat on Saturday afternoon.

The French left back was shown a straight red card four minutes after the restart as the League One side led through a Will Grigg opener in the seventh minute.

Masuaku now faces a lengthy suspension, which will come at a bad time for West Ham given their pile-up of injury problems.

ARTHUR MASUAKU APOLOGY IN FULL

I want to say sorry for my actions yesterday - I let down my team-mates, the manager, coaches, board and the fans.

I am very sad because the manager and coaches have put a lot of faith in me but I will work very hard to try and win that back.

It was in the heat of the moment and out of character for me but I know it was totally unacceptable and I will learn from the first red card of my career.

Masuaku posted the apology on his Twitter page saying: 'I want to say sorry for my actions yesterday - I let down my team-mates, the manager, coaches, board and the fans.

'I am very sad because the manager and coaches have put a lot of faith in me but I will work very hard to try and win that back.

'It was in the heat of the moment and out of character for me but I know it was totally unacceptable and I will learn from the first red card of my career.'

Hammers boss David Moyes has described the player's actions as 'despicable' after the London club were dumped out of the FA Cup on Saturday.

'It was despicable,' Moyes said after the game. 'I've not seen it from him. We like him, he's a really good boy around the club... it is out of character.

'He will deserve everything he gets and he'll get something he deserves from us. It's unacceptable.'

As of Sunday afternoon, the club haven't made a call on what punishment they'll be giving the defender.

Leeds United forward Samu Saiz accepted a six-game ban for spitting in their FA Cup third round defeat at Newport earlier this month.
