Cardiff defender Joe Bennett has apologised for injuring Manchester City star Leroy Sane with a horror tackle during Sunday's full-blooded FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Germany international Sane faces a spell on the sidelines after limping off at half-time following the brutal challenge by Bennett in City's 2-0 victory.

Bennett was only booked, though television replays showed that the challenge might have been worthy of a red card. Bennett was then sent off in added time after another crunching foul on teenager Brahim Diaz.

The former Aston Vila defender wrote on his Twitter account: 'Just want to apologise to Leroy Sane for my tackle today. I tried to stop the counter attack and completely mistimed my attempt.

'I didn't mean to catch him like I did. I hope it's nothing serious and he recovers quickly.'

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock did not defend Bennett, who will now suspended for Saturday's Championship game against City's promotion rivals Leeds United.

'It is unprofessional from Joe and then to commit one in the 92nd minute,' said Warnock. 'Maybe he does not want to go to Leeds on Saturday. He will be training morning, noon and night, I can tell you that.'

Pep Guardiola felt Manchester City's rough FA Cup ride at Cardiff underlined why it is 'impossible' for his side to win four trophies this season.

City reached the last 16 of the competition with first-half goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling clinching a 2-0 win.

'Did I fear serious injuries? Of course,' Guardiola said after the runaway Premier League leaders had maintained their interest in three cup competitions.

'Every team can play how they want. If they decide to play in that way, perfect.

'But there is one man, in black, and he has to decide what is correct and incorrect.

'When you say, "Why don't you win the four titles?" I need the players to win the four titles.

'It's impossible for that to happen. We just go onto West Brom and try to win, go to Burnley and try to win, step by step with the players that we have.'
